In this photo I see a Negro tenant family who barely live on fifty dollars a year. They have to pay a standing rent which gives them a place to live and give them shelter. This particular family has five children working at the ages of seven to fourteen. The older children were workers on cultivating while the older children hoe and chop. This picture takes place in Eutaw, Alabama and it shows a typical Negro family and them working on the farm to survive.
What do you notice first? I notice that the two women have straw hats on and dresses. This is not enough to protect their skin from the rays of the sun. They, sadly, cannot buy anything that can keep them more protected because of the small job wage they are making working the land. This was the life of Negros beause people thought of them as servants due to the color of their skin. White people would think they were the best and the Negros should know that at all costs.
What people and objects are shown? Two Negro women are show in this picture working the land with a hoe to plant crops that will make them more money when they sprout. This also shows that they are on a farm trying hard to make their money to survive.
Reflect
Why do you think this image was made? I think that this picture was made to show how difficult these peoples' lives were due to the terrible treatment they received because of the color of their skin. It was made to show the unfairness that was going around during the Great Depression between the treatment of the Colored and the treatment of the Whites. The Blacks would always be punished for problems that Whites caused. The Whites would still get in trouble, but not as often and the punishments would not be as severe.
What’s happening in the image? These Negros are working on the farm to earn their money. They are using a hoe to cultivate the land which looks like it does not have good farming soil. These poor women are working a DEAD land and they are forced to do it for their money. I personally feel bad for them because I don't think this is fair. How come the Negros were targeted and no one else? Why did they think Whites were perfect when they aren't? I know i'm not!
When do you think it was made? During the Great Depression because this is EXACTLY how the interveiws describe a typical Negro day. They were out to work to earn money that barely got them a piece of bread.
Question What do you wonder about...
who? I wonder why the Negros were the ones who were targeted?
what? I wonder what they are growing?
when? I wonder when people will realize segregation is NOT okay because it descriminates people and it is usually the people we don't have to worry about? The people we need to worry about are people against the United States and want to harm us. For example, the people who made 9/11 occur.
